Job Summary: Provides professional legal services for the City and related work as required. This position is at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Meridian City Attorney.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: An employee in this class spends a majority of his or her time providing civil legal assistance to all City Departments, the Mayor, and the City Council. The employee may be expected to occasionally attend City Council or various Commission meetings as directed by the City Attorney. When in attendance at those meetings, this attorney will provide advice and counsel to the Mayor, City Council, City department personnel, City Commissioners, and other customers. The employee is expected to develop an expertise in the functions of City departments and divisions and work independently with his or her customers. Acts as legal consultant to City departments and divisions on special projects and/or issues; researches and prepares legal opinions; drafts and reviews contracts, ordinances and resolutions; occasionally attends daytime and evening meetings to provide advice and counsel to the Mayor, the City Council, City department personnel, City Commissioners and other customers; represents the City at civil hearings and trials; performs duties as assigned or delegated by the City Attorney or Deputy City Attorney; reviews and/or responds to public records requests; drafts media releases; may represent the City in grievance and unemployment hearings.
Job Specification: Knowledge of the principles of municipal civil law; civil trial procedure; civil rules of evidence; legal ethics and complex parliamentary process utilizing Roberts Rules of Order. Expertise in the particular functions all of the departments or divisions of the City of Meridian. Familiarity with real estate law, land use law and environmental law preferred.
Ability to: perform legal research; prepare legal opinions; work independently with civil customers; keep key personnel regularly informed; help develop norms among team members; and represent the City before outside agencies, committees, and elected and/or appointed officials.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Admission with the Idaho State Bar or provisional license with full admission to the Idaho State Bar within one (1) year of securing position, is required. Good standing with any state bar to which employee is admitted is required.
Salary: $24.42 - 28.28/hr.DOE
