Job Title:             Assistant Wastewater Superintendent

Hiring Salary:     $4,362.00 -  $4,725.00 per month, DOE  

Salary Range:   $4,362.00 - $6,815.00 per month, DOE

 

Job Summary:  Highly responsible managerial work in the operation, maintenance and development of the City wastewater treatment plant facilities and sewer collection system. Provides direct general supervision, leadership, and training to all division staff.  Responsible Charge work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s wastewater collection and treatment facilities.  Reports to Wastewater Superintendent.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the work of collection and maintenance personnel engaged in the maintenance and mechanical repair of plant equipment and facilities, including skilled mechanical and electrical work and the work of sewer crews engaged in the cleaning and maintenance of collection system sewer lines.

  • Inspects plant operations frequently to assure all equipment is operating at top efficiency; assures that proper maintenance and servicing is performed on all machinery and processing or collection system equipment.

  • Accountable for the wastewater treatment plant’s overall compliance with state and federal environmental regulations and discharge monitoring permit criteria;

  • Day-to-day supervision of Wastewater Collections and Maintenance staff;

  • Maintains plant records and helps administer the Pretreatment Program and Biosolids Program;

  • Tracks and maintains records relating to compliance with the Wastewater Division Air Permit issued by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality.

  • Participates in budget development for the Wastewater division, regularly reviews division budget, approves routine expenditures, and promotes financial accountability throughout the division.

  • Prepares oral and written progress reports to the Wastewater Superintendent;

  • Represents the Division at appropriate meetings;

  • Prepares employee shift and on-call schedules and assists with coordinating the maintenance schedules;

  • Administers Training and Safety Programs;

  • Routinely reviews plant operations and maintenance records;

  • Reviews proposed construction and specification documents, coordinates plant assets with contractor for smooth upgrades.

  • Develops Standard Operating Procedures for division processes

  • Maintains records according to Record Retention Policies outlined by the city.

Job Specifications:

  • Associates degree or equivalent, plus considerable wastewater treatment plant operation experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the desired skills, knowledge, and abilities;

  • Good knowledge of the operation and servicing requirements of pump motors, electrical machinery, mechanical equipment, and control equipment commonly related to wastewater treatment and collection;

  • Substantial knowledge of the City of Meridian Wastewater Treatment Plant operation and maintenance Requirements;

  • Good knowledge of Pretreatment Regulations;

  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of supervision;

  • Must display an attitude of cooperation and the ability to work well with others;

  • Ability to effectively direct the activities of subordinates in a manner which will accomplish program objectives;

  • Ability to train and evaluate subordinates in the skillful and safe operation and maintenance of equipment;

  • Ability to maintain records and prepare activity reports;

  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with citizen complaints;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with respect to subordinates, other city personnel and the public;

Other Position Qualifications:

  • Must possess an Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major course work in physical science, wastewater technology, engineering, business administration, or a related field or have the combination of education and experience to satisfy The Idaho Bureau of Occupational Licensing Class IV Operator requirements..

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain Class IV Idaho Wastewater Treatment Operators and Class IV Collections Licenses within 24 months;

  • Must hold a valid State of Idaho Drivers License & safe driving record;

  • Must have good communication and public relations skills.

 

Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Pickup truck, and various office equipment such as telephone, calculator and copy machine. 

 

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in an office environment while sitting at a desk for intermittent periods of time.  The noise level often in the work environment is usually quiet in the office and moderate to loud in the field;

  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions;

  • Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration;

  • Requires driving a motor vehicle or maintenance equipment;

  • Occasionally is exposed to risk of electrical shock;

  • Occasionally requires lifting and moving up to 50 pounds.

 

Travel Requirments:

  • Drives a City motor vehicle to other city sites.
