"There's No Place Like Homeless"
An opportunity to learn about and experience homelessness
April 2006

The MYAC has mobilized young people all over the city to do fundraisers for Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity. For example the Meridian Middle School Spirit Club will host a dance Friday, April 14th with all proceeds going to this project. Meridian Gospel Tabernacle Youth Group is selling dog houses and bird houses to raise funds. They call their project, "Habitat for Non-Humanity."

For every $300.00 raised, the group will get to send one representative to spend the night with us in Storey Park living as a homeless person.  There will be games and speakers and a soup-line.  On Saturday, April 22 we are inviting the entire community to come to the park and drop off donations for Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity, the Meridian Food Bank, and the Idaho Youth Ranch.

We hope to raise $60,000.00 to build a Habitat home right here in Meridian. Special Thanks to our corporate sponser Don Hubble.

Operation Venderlization
An initiative to provide healthier food choices at school
2006 School Year

Higher test scores, better grades, fewer discipline problems and teachers who have more time to be proactive with students. We can make t his happen and increase school revenues at the same time.  Stats show that all of these things happen when "junk food" is removed from vending machines. Just some food for thought.

Drug Testing
Random Drug Test Could Help Students Who Have a Problem
2006 School Year
The MYAC supported an initiative to ask students who wish to be involved in extra curricular activities to submitt their names to a random drug test pool.

Council Members Travel to Lewiston
Association of Idaho Cities Honors the MYAC

Chairperson RoAnne de Weerd, and Jacob Henthorn spent several days at the AIC conference recently.  They were welcomed and honored by leaders of the Nez Perce people, treated to river rafting and jet boat rides.  They also attended classes on leadership.

The highlight of the trip came when the Association of Idaho Cities presented the Mayor and RoAnne with the City Achievement award for the Youth Council's "There's No Place Like Homeless" project. Good times!

Youth Engagement Seminar
Council members meet with Mayor Nancolas

On July 14th and 15th the MYAC traveled to Caldwell, where they met with Mayor Garret Nancolas and leaders of Serve Idaho for a conference on youth engagement and sustainability. Members had an opportunity to engage these community leaders in small group discussion and get advise on how to lead specific youth projects in the coming year. Mayor Nancolas was a great host and mentor.  Our coucil came away excited to get started on another great year. We send our thanks to Mayor Nancolas, the City of Caldwell and the folks from Serve Idaho.
