Water Tower Championship

The City of Meridian, in collaboration with West Ada School District and Powered by CapEd Credit Union, is excited to launch the Water Tower Championship—a new tradition celebrating the achievements of high school athletes and scholars. This dynamic competition will span various sports and activities, including Football, Cross Country, Soccer, Debate, and Drama, across Meridian's 6A high schools: Meridian High School, Rocky Mountain High School, Mountain View High School, and Owyhee High School.

Students can earn points through Head-to-Head Competitions, End-of-Season Results, and academic performance, with additional recognition for the highest GPA. The school with the most points at the end of the year will win the Water Tower Trophy, a symbol of excellence designed in collaboration with the Meridian Library District.

Program Structure

The Water Tower Championship is an athletic, activities, and educational Competition series between 6A High Schools in Meridian, Idaho, including Meridian High School, Rocky Mountain High School, Mountain View High School, and Owyhee High School. These four (4) schools will be awarded points for their athletic performance, activities performance, and education performance.

All competitive levels sanctioned by the Idaho High School Activities Association and the Southern Idaho Conference will be Eligible. The competition levels involved in the Water Tower Championship are Varsity, Junior Variety, and Sophomore/Freshman.

Scoring and rankings

Each year, these high schools in Meridian will compete in the series. The school with the most overall points will win. Only the Idaho High School Activities Association sanctioned sports and activities will be considered for this program.

Head-to-Head Scoring:

Sports and activities in the category points will be awarded to the schools with the best record against other Meridian Schools.

Matches or games that will count towards this category are:

  1. The game or match only includes two of the 4 Meridian, Idaho High schools.
  2. The game or match occurs in the regular season of that sport

Ranking Standards:

  1. Schools will be ranked based on winning percentage against other teams and schools in Meridian.
  2. Any ties in this category will be settled by the end of the season rankings
  • If the rankings are not defined or the teams are tied in the rankings, the tied schools will receive full points

Awarded Points:

  1. Points will be awarded to the first and second-place teams or schools.
    1. Varsity Sports and Activities Awarded Point Scale
      1. First place team will receive 4 Points
      2. Second place team will receive 3 Points
  • Third place team will receive 2 Points
  1. Fourth team will receive 1 Point
  1. Junior Varsity and Sophomore/Freshman Awarded Point Scale
    1. First place team will receive 4 points
    2. Second place team will receive 3 points
  • Third place team will receive 2 points
  1. Fourth team will receive 1 point
  1. The Varsity Team with the highest GPA will receive 2 extra points toward the Water Tower Championship

End of the Season Results Scoring:

For sports and activities in this category, points will be awarded to the two teams with the highest end-of-season rankings.

A point will be awarded if:

  1. There is a clear and stated ranking of the team, club, or school
  2. The final ranking is published before the end of the school year for West Ada School District

Ranking Standards:

  1. Rankings will be from the Idaho High School Athletics and Activities Association

Awarded Points:

  1. Points will be awarded to the first and second-place teams or schools.
    1. Varsity Sports and Activities Awarded Point Scale
      1. First place team will receive 4 points
      2. Second place team will receive 3 points
  • Third place team will receive 2 points
  1. Fourth team will receive 1 point
  1. Junior Varsity and Sophomore/Freshman Awarded Point Scale
    1. First place team will receive 4 points
    2. Second place team will receive 3 points
  • Third place team will receive 2 points
  1. Fourth team will receive 1 point
  1. The Varsity Team with the highest GPA will receive 2 extra points toward the Water Tower Championship

Points Category 3 – School GPA

For this point category, points will be awarded to the school with the highest GPA at the end of the school year

 Ranking Standards:

  1. Schools will be ranked by the highest GPA of each school as reported by West Ada School Districts
  2. In the case of a tie, each tied school will receive the full points; for example, if School A and School B tie for first place, both schools will receive 4 points.

Awarded Points:

  1. Points will be awarded to the first and second-place team or school.
    1. First place school will receive 4 points
    2. Second place school will receive 3 points
  • Third place school will receive 2 points
  1. Fourth place school will receive 1 point
