Residential Household Hazardous Waste

Information about Household Hazardous Waste

Don't dump it! Don't pour it! Don't toss it!

Many household products and items contain ingredients or components that can be hazardous to your health and the environment. These materials are prohibited from being placed into trash/recycling carts or down the drain. To ensure proper disposal of materials, please follow these household hazardous waste (HHW) guidelines.

Read the Label:

Look for words such as caution, warning, danger, poison, flammable, reactive, corrosive, oxidizer, irritant, toxic, or environmental hazard on the product label.

Know Where to Throw:

Review the list of common HHW materials and drop-off locations below.

Thank you for helping the Meridian Fire Department, your Republic Services drivers, and our environment stay safe.

Refrigerant

Appliances containing refrigerant (including Freon™), commonly found in refrigerators, air conditioners, water coolers, mini-fridges, freezers, and dehumidifiers, are not accepted at HHW mobile sites. However, they are accepted at the curb. To have your household refrigerant-containing appliance picked up curbside, visit the Bulky Item webpage.

There is a fee for the collection of these appliances due to the processing of refrigerant gas.

FOG

Fat, oil, and grease, or FOG, is a by-product of cooking many foods. Examples include meat, dairy products, soups, and anything with vegetable oil. FOG solidifies when cooled and can block and damage sewer pipes; thus, it should not be poured down the drain.

Residents can bring both liquid cooking oil and solidified FOG to HHW sites.

Please note:

  • There is a limit of five (5) gallons of FOG per drop-off day.
  • FOG must be in a container with a tight-fitting lid.
For more information on FOG, visit the Pretreatment for Residents webpage.

For a business to be able to discard Hazardous Waste at the Ada County Landfill, they must meet certain criteria.

Who Can Participate?

Businesses or organizations located within Ada County that are considered a Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and/or generate wastes regulated under the Universal Waste Rule (e.g., fluorescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs) may participate. Businesses that generate larger quantities are advised to contact the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality DEQ for guidance.
VSQG must meet three conditions:
  • Produce less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste each month.
  • Produce less than 2.2 pounds of acutely hazardous waste each month.
  • Store no more than 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste on site.

Calculating How Much Waste Your Business Produces

To determine generator status, you must do the following:
  • Look at all the waste streams generated at your facility.
  • Determine which waste streams are hazardous.
  • Estimate the quantity of hazardous waste generated and stored each month (use the standard: one gallon equals eight pounds to estimate total pounds).

For more than one business location, calculate quantities from each location separately. If the total amount of waste generated at your facility is less than 220 pounds per month and you also meet the above criteria, your business is eligible to register for the program and bring waste to the Ada County Landfill.

If you are unclear how to calculate your generated waste, please contact the Ada County Landfill Hazardous Waste Site or the Idaho DEQ for guidance.

Preparing to bring Your Hazardous Waste to the Landfill

  • Register your Waste
